Glassware - A Brief History of Cups (Coffee, Tea, Mugs)

Glassware encompasses everything from tableware to drinking ware and decorative ware. To describe each and every item would take a long time. Glassware has been used for centuries to serve food and drink. Today, glassware remains a pivotal element in our daily existence.

Drinking ware which include drinking glasses ranging from cocktail glasses to various goblets, wine glasses and champagne glasses, are integral when entertaining. Let us look into the vast foray of cups, paying specific attention to teacups, coffee cups and mugs.

A teacup is a small apparatus that is handled with the thumb and fingers, one or two at a time. Many are created using ceramic, although those made from glass are widely used around the world. A teacup comes primarily in a set, inclusive of a saucer. A good teacup set comes with its own matching teapot, jug for creamer and milk and also a sugar bowl with a lid. As a basis of comparison, teacups are usually more ample and diminutive than coffee cups, as tea is a beverage meant to be sipped slowly.

One of the original teacups created for drinking purposes were first discovered in Europe, and were imported from Japan's Imari port. In the Far East, teacups are more like mini-bowls, as they do not possess handles. The ones inspired by the Europeans' Meissen, also did not have handles attached.

Teacups used by the Chinese are even smaller than their Japanese counterparts, and can hold only a minuscule amount of tea. These teacups were meant to be used together with the legendary Yi Xing and Gaiwan teapots.

Modern teacups are wider and easier to maneuver.

Coffee cups were traditionally made from glazed ceramic, although just like contemporary tea cups, coffee cups are also popular in glass. A typical coffee cup has an expansive single handle, which enables the drinker to hold the cup carefully while the beverage inside is piping hot. Coffee cups made of glass are thicker, so that they would not break easily when washed.

Espresso and cappuccino cups are used for drinking specific types of coffee, which explains their smaller dimensions. Coffee cups are also widely used as promotional items and available with many slogans and designs, targeted for the mass market. After dinner coffee cups are also accompanied by tiny coffee spoons. Ones which are made of glass are fast becoming coveted items.

Mugs were created sturdier than both tea and coffee cups and utilized to drink a multitude of hot beverages from cocoa to chocolate. Mugs are built latger, and come with handles to house a bigger amount of liquids. Mugs are not used for formal dining however, as they are perceived to be more casual drinking ware.

Modern day mugs are made from bone china, porcelain or earthenware, but the ones made from strengthened glass, such as those from Pyrex have also become drinking staples in many homes.

Crucial Distinctive Characteristics of Chinese Floor Vases

Being able to identify which floor vases are from what region of the world is a useful skill when buying vases for a specific motif. Pairs of ducks were used to symbolize the faithful love between husband and wife. In ancient China, most domesticated ducks could not fly. They were therefore especially appropriate for signifying the fidelity between husband and wife. Phoenixes often stood for the Empress herself and are not as frequently encountered. The phoenix symbolized recovery of power and social renown. It also stood for regal feminine beauty just as the dragon symbolized the Emperor.

The important glazes of Chinese floor pottery

Probably the most famous of the Chinese glazes is the celadon glaze. Most specimens are transparent and green in color. However, by varying the mixture and firing temperature of the porcelain, brownish red glazes could be produced. Crackled celadon vases may also be encountered. The cobalt blue glazes come next in popularity. This type of dye was used for making the highly valued early blue floor vases. The Chinese also used red and green glazes as well as a glaze which resembled the skin of the tiger. This last was called 'tiger glaze'.

In order to be able to identify a floor vase as being of Chinese make, two features of the vase should be examined. First, does it portray images that are typically Chinese and painted in the Chinese style? Is the glaze used a traditional glaze of Chinese potters? Because of the fact that Japan borrowed heavily from Chinese traditional beliefs, many of their own vases use typically Chinese imagery. However, sufficient familiarity with the drawing styles of both nations will allow distinguishing Chinese from Japanese pottery.

It is not just the imagery and the glaze that can be used to determine which vases are authentic Chinese floor vases. The players can choose the talents they want for their characters. You can do this by building your characters talent trees for various factors like healing, magic, shooting, tanking etc. Your character will automatically be assigned two Extracting professions but you can hone their skills and teach them new professions. Professions in Aion include weaponsmithing, armorsmithing, sewing, handwork, alchemy and cooking.

The idea is for the player to use his powers to influence dynamic relationships between the various realms, guilds, races and character classes. You will have to encounter fearsome demons and dragons on your quest. The dragons are common enemies of all the players. Players are rewarded with kina, experience, items and reputation for their performance. Your character will also be rewarded with gold, silver and copper to finance your exploration of the lands of Aion.

Aion is a great game which provides a wonderful visual treat with its breathtaking 3 dimensional world. It also offers a good interactive experience and nice music scores. In other words, it is a complete MMO games package.

A northern British artist's view of life and work in the mill towns

Renowned as one of Britain's greatest artists, his unique stlye is well known to people across the word. His life was not an easy one, and neither were the lifes of many characters he portrayed.

In the year 1909, L.S. more than half of Lowry's life was spent in Salford, Manchester, where he moved originally with his parents. At Salford, he attended the Salford School of Art, which gave raise to his interest in landscape, both urban and industrial. In the year 1919, he exhibited his work in Paris Salon along with Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

The year 1930 saw him exhibiting his work at Royal Academy in London. In the year 1945, Manchester University awarded him honorary MA, followed by Doctor of Letters in 1961. He was elected into the Royal Academy in 1962 and in 1965 he obtained the freedom of City of Salford.

If one is known for recording thee landscape of Salford and Manchester according the culture and period, there is no one better than L.S. Lowry. His work reflects these two industrial towns in distinct forms in both before and after II World War period. His work gives a comprehensive record of these two towns before and after the war period. He painted many seascapes and portraits of people apart from industrial landscapes. L.S. There was a cetain querkyness to some of Lowry's paintings, showing a view that people had not realized.

Oh all his work, L.S. Lowry was maximum renowned for his "Matchstick Men". througout his life, it is estimated that he produced over ten thousand works of art, from a simple 'doodle' to a major oil painting on canvas. Later part of his life, he seemed to have concentrating on stick figures either in group or as lone figures. The price of his original work, including pencil sketches and signed prints has escalated enormously over the years.

The status of L.S. Lowry in the list of British artists of the 20th Century was moved up by several notches when his artwork "Going to the Match" was bought at a record price of £1.9 million by Manchester-based Professional Footballers Association at an auction.

In 1976, this great artist met his untimely death while staying at Mottram but was marked by a distinct homage paid by the people of Manchester in a unique way. Death of Lowry was celebrated by many art galleries as they thought he died without an inheritance. But unfortunately he had left all his work to Lowry, a girl student who had asked him for some advice ages ago.

A large contemporary art gallery/museum has been built which houses a good collection of Lowry's work and carries his name.

Landscape Hiroshige

5 Of Ando Hiroshige's Best Landscape Woodblock Designs

Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) is generally considered the greatest Ukiyo-e artist (together with the great Hokusai) of the landscape genre. He was a son of an Edo (today's Tokyo) firewarden and although he succeeded on an early age to his father's hereditary post the attraction of becoming a woodblock designer dominated. He became a student of Utagawa Toyohiro (1773-1828) and studied the classical tradition of the Kano painting style. Hiroshige was also very much interested and influenced by the Western artists and their view on depicting the landscape and the perspective.   The following five woodblock designs are from two of Hiroshige's finest contributions to Japanese art, namely his series 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' (c.1833-34) and 'One Hundred Famous on Edo' (c.1856-59)    

Nocturnal Snowfall in Kambara (Station 16 in the series 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' )   

Hiroshige was fascinated by the realism of photography and the possibilities of incorporating its compositions to his woodblock designs. One of his best known examples is the Sudden Shower print which along with his Plum Garden design inspired Van Gogh. Hiroshige depicts six townspeople caught in a sudden downpour on the Ohashi bridge. On the Sumida river a raftsman, wearing a straw raincoat, tries to control his raft through the fast running water. A rather traditional scene depicting the town of Kambara covered under a thick white blanket of snow. On the right of the image two travellers walking uphill just passed by a local residant who's holding an umbrella. All three are trudging through the snow leaving their footprints while large flakes fall from the dark sky. What makes this design so extraordinary is the minimal use of colour and the skilful manner in which Hiroshige depicts snow giving this scene a forceful poetic effect. Strangely enough Kambara is situated near a warm stretch of coast, where it seldomly snows, so this scene probably represents an ebullition of Hiroshige's imagination.    

Sudden Rainstorm at Shono (Station 46 in the series 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' )   

In this most famous of all Hiroshige's prints some inhabitants of Shono are overtaken by a sudden downpour and are running for shelter. Two palanquin bearers and their human freight are running up the steep mountain accompanied by a basket-seller. Running down the mountain are a traveller and his servant with the latter one holding an umbrella. The countryside is heavily veiled in rain with the town Shono barely visible.    In this dynamic composition Hiroshige has divided the space in audacious triangles of varying depth with the two groups of figures running in opposite directions out of the frame. Hiroshige creates a perspective depth using different shades of black on the bamboo forest effectively contrasting with the overall colour composition giving it an almost idyllic feel.    

Plum Orchard in Kameido (a.k.a. Plum Garden) (Print 30 in the series 'One-Hundred Views on Edo' )  

Hiroshige's Plum Garden is a perfect example of the symbiotic exchange between the artists of the East and the West. In this daring composition (and in many others in this series) Hiroshige applies the repoussoir device, which was a common technique in Western art, placing a large plum-tree to the foreground with the twigs dividing the image in seperate parts. The visitors in the background, who enjoy the sight of these trees, almost look like little puppets. The red of the sky and the green of the landscape represent the two major contrasting hues and enhance the impression of uniqueness expressed by the picture. The print is probably best known as a model for Vincent van Gogh's copy in oils.    

Sudden Shower at Ohashi (a.k.a. Sudden Shower) (Print 52 in the series 'One-Hundred Views on Edo' )    

The vertical lines of the rain accentuated by the vertical format of the print are masterfully counterbalanced by the diagonal lines of the bridge on the foreground and the riverbank in the background. In an earlier impression (most probably an earlier "proof" state!) two addtional rafts are depicted.    

Fox Fires on New Year's Eve at the Garment Nettle Tree at Oji (a.k.a. Fox fires) (Print 118 in the series 'One-Hundred Views on Edo' )  

The Foxfires design is the conclusive print Hiroshige produced for his 'One-Hundred Views on Edo' -series, published shortly before his death, and is the only one in the entire series that involves the fantasy theme. This mysterious design is based on an old Japanese legend in which fox spirits (kitsune) gather around the Garment Nettle Tree on New Year's Eve. Hiroshige's terrific use of different shades of blue adds to the ominous emanation. He often used Prussian blue in his work earning him the nickname "Blue Hiroshige".

Oriental Hand-Made Chinese Silk Embroidery

Do you know what  is silk embroidery? Do you know what it looks like? Many people I come across in the U.S. are either unaware or unfamiliar with what silk embroidery is. Moreover, for the few who are familiar with this specialized Chinese skill, I have discovered that they do not have a true knowledge and appreciation for this fine Chinese art form. Thus, the implication can be made that "silk embroidery" is truly a "Hidden Oriental Jewel" that has been under appreciated in the West due mainly to the fact that the common person is ignorant of the time, effort, and skill required to create high-quality "silk embroidery" works. Hence, the purpose of this article will be to inform and educate you (whether the art lover or the common person) on: What is silk embroidery?, How it is made?, How to appreciate it?, etc. My hope is that you will acquire an appreciation for the uniqueness and value of this oft-overlooked Chinese art. Whether an art lover or not, I think you will come to appreciate the value of this "Hidden Oriental Jewel."

 

What is Silk Embroidery?

 

Silk embroidery is a type of Oriental wall art that results from the traditional Chinese skill of pulling fine strands of colored silk through a canvas to create a beautiful work of art. The most common way to enjoy silk embroidery is as a framed, wall-hanging object. Hence, it is ideal as a gift, collectible, home decoration, souvenir, or office piece. The art of skill embroidery originated in China and has been practiced there for over 4,800 years. It reached a high level early in the Qing and Han dynasties, with silk and silk embroidery being the main products transported along the ancient Chinese Silk Road.

 

China was one of the first countries to transform embroidery into an advanced art form. The use of special embroidery techniques and styles sets apart Chinese embroidery from embroidery created in other parts of the world. In the past, embroidery skills were considered to be an essential skill every woman was to possess. A woman who could create a high-quality embroidery piece was admired and well-respected. Women from rich families took on embroidery as a hobby while those from poor families did it for a living. Today, high-quality embroidery works are treated on the same level as the best Chinese paintings and Tang/Song Dynasty poems

 

How To Appreciate Silk Embroidery?

 

Whether you're an "art lover" or the "common person," you'll come to appreciate the value of silk embroidery once you learn of the skill and effort that goes into creating each piece. To create a high quality piece, an artist must split a single silk thread into several thinner threads. It can be split into 12 to 48 thinner strands - depending on how fine the artist wants to be with his/her piece. The embroiderer then stitches layer after layer using threads of a variety of colors to reach the final wonderful effect. Embroiderers are known to take frequent breaks - every 10 to 15 minutes - to rest their eyes due to the strenuous nature of their work.

 

Due to the labor-intensiveness of the work, some larger and more intricate pieces of embroidery may require a year to a year and a half to complete by an artist or group of artists. Those works sell for thousands of dollars, - which is reasonable - considering the skill and time involved in creating the work. Of course, smaller pieces are available that are of high quality yet sell for much less.

 

Four Types of Silk Embroidery
The adoption of different needling methods through the years has resulted in four distinctive embroidery styles in China:

 

1) "Su" embroidery of Jiangsu Province - known for its delicacy and elegance, this style is usually very simple, highlighting a main theme. Its stitching is smooth, dense, thin, neat, even, delicate and harmonious. The thin thread is divided into up to 49 strands that are barely visible to the naked eye. Su embroidery is where double-sided embroidery originated. Su embroidery products were sent to participate in the Panama World Fair in 1905.

 

2) "Xiang" embroidery of Hunan Province - became the main craft in places around Changsha, capital city of Hunan Province, in the Qing Dynasty. Xiang embroidery was developed from Hunan folk embroidery methods, but it also drew on the skills of Su embroidery and Yue embroidery. This method uses loose colorful threads to embroider the pattern with the stitches being not as neat as those of other embroidery styles. The various colored threads are mixed together, showing a gradual change in color with a rich and harmonious tone. Designs on Xiang embroidery mostly derive from traditional Chinese paintings of landscapes, human figures, flowers, birds and animals. The most common designs on Xiang embroidery are lions and tigers. The tigers appear strong and bold, revealing their power and menace as a king of animals. Xiang embroidery won the best award in the Torino World Fair in Italy in 1912 and the First Award in the Panama World Fair in 1943.

 

3) "Yue" embroidery of Guangdong Province - is rich and complicated in content with bright colors and strong decorative effects. The embroidery is smooth and even. One type, gold and silver cushion embroidery, creates a magnificent three-dimensional effect. Yue embroidery has a wide range of designs, the most common ones being birds worshipping the sun, dragons and phoenixes.

 

4) "Shu" embroidery of Sichuan Province - are mostly found in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province. They are made with soft satins and colored threads as the raw materials are embroidered by hand. The varied stitching methods form their unique local style. Designs on Shu embroidery include flowers, birds, landscapes, fish, worms and human figures. The products themselves include quilt covers, pillow covers, back cushions, table cloths, scarves and handkerchiefs.

 

Western-Style Silk Embroidery

 

Western-style silk embroidery occurs as the result of an
artist using fine silk strands and needles to accurately
reproduce famous Western-style oil paintings (see figure 2)
- like Van Gogh and Da Vinci. It is truly amazing how an
embroidery artist can literally take silk strands and create
a silk reproduction of a well-known artist's oil painting.

 

Essentially, the artist paints with fine silk strands instead
of painting with oil. Think about it . . . does this not perhaps
require more skill than painting with oil itself? Despite the
difference in materials and technique, one thing about a
silk embroidery work is that - from a distance - it can very
much resemble a work of oil painting .

 

From up close, however, one can notice the colorful
patterns and detailed stitching in a silk embroidery work.
In fact, the colors will appear more bright and lively than
the usually duller colors of an oil painting.

 

Double-Sided Silk Embroidery

 

Double-sided silk embroidery is the result of an advanced embroidery technique in which the artist stitches on both sides of a single transparent silk canvas. The embroidered design displays on both the front and back sides of the fabric and does not show the joints in the stitching. Such a work is normally mounted as a screen on a wooden frame. A special feature about double-sided silk embroidery is that you can enjoy the artist's handiwork from either side of the picture.

 

How To Mount Store Silk Embroidery

 

Mounting a piece of silk embroidery can be an art in and of itself.

 

Hard Mounting - is most suitable for small to medium-sized embroidery pieces. It involves mounting the piece on a wooden board or frame with a front protective glass. The mounting technique is relatively easy to master.

 

Soft Mounting - is most suitable for larger pieces. It involves mounting the embroidery piece on a large sheet of paper with a silk border. The mounting technique is very difficult to master. As a result, due to the nature of the mounting technique, a piece with soft mounting is more valuable.

 

Storing - be sure to wrap embroidery pieces in a container that protects it from moths. Also, embroidery should not be exposed to strong light - especially sunshine - for an extended period of time. Moreover, the environment should be neither too wet nor too dry.

Wood Carving: How to Choose the Right Style

Wood carving is a special craft. It requires extreme patience that could flourish with a fine imagination. If you decide to become a wood carver, you'll have several styles to choose from. You could use just a piece of wood and a small knife. Or you could go so far as using power tools. So how can you know which style is best for you?

There are five main styles of woodcarving. Each style is distinctly different from the other. These styles are whittling, chip carving, relief carving, intaglio carving and carving in the round.

?Whittling. Whittling involves the removal of pare shavings or bits of wood with a cutting blade. It is the simplest form of wood carving, but not actually the art of wood carving. This is a significant distinction because whittling is, and should always be, very simple. A piece of wood and a knife are all you require. And because it is so simple, whittled objects don't have much detail, as is the case in all other styles of wood carving.

When you're holding a whittled object in your hand, you absolutely know it. Each knife stroke is clearly seen. It remains as simple as when it began centuries ago, during the time of cavemen. Isn't that amazing?

?Chip Carving. Chip carving involves the use of several knives to remove small pieces of wood (chips) from a flat wood surface. These are specially made chip knives that are used to push or pull at the wood, cutting upwards or downwards to free each chip.

Chip carving has become so popular that it is now its own art form. The main technique is to chip varying triangular shapes from the wood. This creates complex patterns that are often geometric in nature. Free form lines are regularly used to accentuate these chipped patterns. You could really let your imagination go.

?Relief Carving. In this style of wood carving, designs are cut in 3-dimensional fashion onto a flat back cut of wood. These are the wood carvings you see on walls or sitting on tables or surface tops.

There are two types of relief carving. A low relief carving is identifiable by the visual effect that is created. Without shadows to imply deep carving, the product appears very shallow and is thus considered low relief. In high relief carvings, a spectacular depth effect is created by the addition of shadows throughout. Both types result in carvings with good dimension and detail. The end product is polished to create a very smooth surface. Then it may be painted, waxed or varnished.

?Intaglio Carving. This style of wood carving is very similar to relief carving. But instead of looking as though it is above the wood surface, it looks as if it is part of the wood. The designs are below the suface because they are carved deep into the wood. Think of old wooden rolling pins. Remember the cute little pictures that were carved into it? That's intaglio carving.

Many furniture makers really like the style of intaglio carving. It has come so far as to be fitted for a blank space, carved separately and then inserted into the furniture. How about that? It can even be found in dining tables and in bedroom furniture. It's wonderful for wood paneling. You can even see it in specialty plaques, as part of an existing decorative item or as the actual surface of coffee tables and end tables.

?Carving In The Round. This is the most advanced style of wood carving. The product can be viewed from all sides with a full and easy view of all details. It is carved out of the wood and its base serves as a supporting platform or as a pedestal. The carving could be a person, an animal or a landscapenearly anything you can imagine. It could be life-sized or to scale. The sky is almost the limit with carving in the round.

This style of carving requires quite a number of tools. A variety of knives, gouges and chisels are a bare minimum. The use of power tools is not surprising and often expected. The final product then is usually quite spectacular. Oftentimes, a product of carving in the round is easily mistaken for a porcelain creation. The details are that impressive.

Shunga, An Introduction To A Japanese Erotic Mystery

Shunga, literally "Images of Spring", is the generic term used to describe erotic prints, books, scrolls and paintings of Japan.    

History  

The beginning of the shunga genre is connected with the origins of Ukiyo-e ('Images of the floating world') and starts with the work of Hishikawa Moronobu and his school between 1660-1670. Originally shunga were published as erotic manuals (guides) for the most popular courtesans in houses of pleasure. But with the growth of prosperity, the expansion of the brothels in Edo (today's Tokyo) and the alterations in the Japanese caste system with the merchants getting wealthier, embracing a hedonistic lifestyle, shunga gained a more diverting purpose. Shops in the pleasure quarters of Edo, called the Yoshiwara, sold shunga prints and books as souvenir to the visitors of the brothels. Shunga were also offered as dowry to newly-weds as an educational guide. Around 1765 with the transition to multi-colour woodblock printing, before woodblock prints were colored either by hand or printed with a limited palette, the shunga genre entered new ground (both aesthetically and commercially).This revival lasted another century ending at the start of the Meiji period (1868-1912) when Japan opened its economic and cultural gates to the West. During the Meiji period only a few artists specialized in designing shunga prints which were mainly influenced by Western art.      

Subjects and Themes  

At first glance a shunga image can have a confrontational effect on the (Western) viewer because of the undisguised way the subject matter has been portrayed or the exaggerated depiction of genitalia. Once accustomed he can experience the striking compositions and use of colour, the humour and the daring handling of themes. The shunga genre accommodates a wide range of themes. Besides the rendering of conventional heterosexual love-making mostly between married couples or courtesans and their clients it also dealt with the homosexual and lesbian acts of love, scenes involving hermaphrodites, mythical figures, ghosts, Westerners, bestiality and even necrophelia.      

Censorship  

In Japan, during the reign of the Tokugawa shogunate from 1660 to 1868, shunga were seen as objects injurious to public morals and subject to unavailing censorship. Today they are still prohibited but classified as erotica and therefore tolerated. It is nevertheless not permitted to import them into the country.      

Shunga Today  

"Recently it has become more widely admitted that, at their best, they are to be ranked - with works by Western artists of the caliber of Dürer, Rembrandt and Degas - among the finest of all graphic art". (Tom Evans -in ' Shunga, The Art of Love in Japan' )  

Over the last decade the attitudes in Japan regarding shunga have changed resulting in the publication of a huge quantity of books including uncensored material and shunga studies in Japan. In the West, the publications on shunga started in 1975 with the ground-breaking book 'Shunga, The Art of Love in Japan' by Tom and Mary Evans followed by Jack Hillier's 'Art of the Japanese Book' in 1987. The memorable exhibition in 1989 at the Musée d'Ilx-elles in Brussels, where the most impressive works in the show were of the shunga genre, also contributed to a renewed interest. In 2005, a unique exhibition was held in the Kunsthal Rotterdam called 'Lentelust' with a chronological overview of this art form. A new extensive publication on shunga by Gian Carlo Calza has been planned for the Spring of 2010.
