Rowlan Hill, a 20-year veteran of the auction business, makes his living as a professional auctioneer. Auctioning is one of the oldest forms of marketing, and according to the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), an auction can maximize sales revenue above any other method of property selling.

A Bit of Auction History

The history of auctions extends back to 500 B.C. when Herodotus used auctions to sell women under the condition that they be married following purchase. Reports indicate that less attractive women were sold with monetary compensation given to the bidder.

The Roman Empire auction mechanism was used by soldiers to sell goods acquired "under the spear." Probably the most bizarre account of early auctions concerns the year 193 A.D. when the entire Roman Empire was put on the auction block after being sacked.

The earliest modern era records of auctions appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1595. The London Gazette often reported the auctioning of artwork at coffeehouses and taverns throughout London in the late 17th century. In the early 18th century, the great auction houses were established; Sotheby's in 1744 and Christie's in 1766.
